The forthcoming Maoists-led government in Nepal is planning to finally seal the Indo-Nepal Peace and Friendship treaty. Prachanda, Communist Party of Nepal head, remarked a day ago that Nepal’s past policy towards the 1950 treaty remains unchanged. The Maoists wish to completely scrap the treaty and replace it with a new one in keeping with the changed context. The former rebel further remarked that Nepal intends to review all other treaties signed between India and Nepal.
The 1950 Indo-Nepal Peace and Friendship treaty allowed people from both the countries to freely travel across the border for employment and reside in either country. During the poll campaigns as well, the Maoists had declared the treaty unequal, demanding to replace the treaty with a fresh pact. Prachanda remarked that after restoration of democracy and doing away with monarchy, Nepal-India relation should be taken to a new height in a more positive and constructive way.
