The Maoists are all set to take a lead in the landmark Thursday, April 10 Constituent Assembly elections which will finally say good bye to monarchy in Nepal. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists) is surging ahead with winning 25 seats of the 47 results announced so far. The CPN (M) is headed by Maoists chief Prachanda and is currently maintaining hold over 65 constituencies while the Nepali congress is leading in 24 constituencies.

Prachanda defeated his closest rival Rajendra Kumar KC of the Nepali Congress from Kathmandu. Prachanda, who spearheaded the decade long struggle in Nepal to overthrow the monarchy, is the CPN (M) Presidential candidate. According to political analysts, if the prevailing trends continue then Prachanda is all set to become the first President of Nepal. With positive results pouring in, Nepal is moving steadily ahead in the democratic process though the mandate indicates that people are initiating a change in the government.

Nepal’s interim Constitution is likely to be rewritten by the new 601-seat Constituent Assembly. With the new Constitution coming in place, the 240 year old monarchy in Nepal is all set to disappear from the political scene of Nepal and the Himalayan state will turn into a ‘federal democratic republic’. Prachanda remarked that he has taken this victory as the mandate of people to consolidate lasting peace. The Maoists leader also pronounced that his party seeks ‘good relations’ with neighbors India and China.
