The Communist Party of Nepal Maoist (CPN-M) has emerged as the single largest party after the results of the 601 member special assembly was declared on Thursday. The polls were conducted on April 10, 2008.The Maoist have won 220 seats in the assembly. However, the Maoists failed to gain the majority required. Nepali Congress, headed by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, has won 110 seats while the Communist party of Nepal (UML) bagged 103 seats. Maoists head , Prachanda,  said that he is holding talks with other parties to form coalition government.

The Nepali Congress and the UML are shocked by their defeat and have shown their unwillingness to participate in the government led by the Maoists. The Maoists ended their arms conflict in Nepal only two years ago. The conflict claimed the lives of more than 13,000 people in Nepal. Laxman Prasad Ghimire, a senior Nepali Congress leader , said that his party workers do not want to join a government led by the Maoist.

The elected assembly is likely to be formed in May. The assembly will have a life span of 30 months after which there will be general elections in Nepal. It is to be noted that when the Maoist will come to power they will end the monarchy in Nepal, write a new constitution and incur social and political changes.
