Orissa's most influential maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda has claimed the responsibility of killing Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati. Sabyasachi Panda is the leader of the Orissa unit of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) which is one of the most wanted maoist groups in the state. The VHP leader was murdered on August 23, 2008 which led to the killing of 35 people of Christian community and series of attacks on Churches all over Orissa.

The maoist leader has made this announcement through a private television channel of Orissa. He further warned that the group will carry on their operation and kill those people who are responsible for creating communal tension in the state. Revealing about the motive of killing Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, Panda said that the VHP leader was trying to create a class-gap in the state by propagating Brahmanism. The group targets the tribals of the state to convert them and their operation is supported by some unscrupulous traders, he stated.

The maoist group of Orissa strongly condemned the attack on Christian community of the state. It said that the VHP has falsely accused Christians and attacked them. The VHP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party all of them are involved in it and are playing riot politics, claimed Panda. Besides killing number of Christians, the VHP activists have burnt thousands of homes in Kandhamal district of Orissa which witnessed harsh violence since August 23.
