In order to boost investment, reduce poverty, enhance connectivity and bring the northeastern region at level with the rest of India, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh introduced the ‘Northeastern Region Vision 2020′ report on Wednesday, July 2. It aims to induce all-round development in all segments of India’s northeast region. Apparently, the ‘Northeastern Region Vision 2020′ report is an attempt to appease the denizens of the northeast who have long been complaining of being neglected and alienated from the rest of the country.

Nearly thousand students donning ethnic Indian dresses cheered as Dr Manmohan Singh introduced the ‘historic initiative’ at the Vigyan Bhawan in the presence of chief ministers and governors of the concerned areas. ‘The time has come for the sun to shine on the northeastern region and to shine brightly,’ remarked the Indian PM. He thereafter added that the Union government will do its best to make the 2020 vision a reality.

The Indian PM, who is himself a Rajya Sabha member from Assam, said that Northeastern Region Vision 2020 targets to replace violence in the insurgency-prone region with development. He said it is through upgradation of infrastructure and connectivity that development will get boosted in the northeast. Other areas where the 2020 vision lays focus includes private investment and industrial development, empowerment of the people by maximizing self governance, rural development, increasing agricultural productivity and so on.
