Manchester United beat Wigan 2-0 on Sunday, May 11, 2008 to clinch the club's 17th English title. The soccer champions were able to grab their win after first half penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and then later due to a strike by Ryan Giggs. The Manchester United Club with this win sealed its tenth title victory under manager Alex Ferguson. Chelsea boss Avram Grant congratulated Ferguson for an extended record of success.
The Manchester United also clinched the win owing to two points reign after their rivals Chelsea and Bolton were held at a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. Kevin Davies scored a late equaliser for Bolton after Andriy Shevchenko had given Chelsea the lead. Other clubs, Arsenal, who won 1-0 at Sunderland, and Liverpool, 2-0 winners at Tottenham, finished third and fourth respectively. These teams will enter the final qualifying round for next season's Champions League. Manchester United is now turning its energy to the upcoming challenge, next week’s Champion League match against Chelsea.
