Mahabalipuram is a famous historical town in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Sited at mere elevation of 12 metres, the town also flaunts some beautiful beaches. Mahabalipuram, earlier called Mamallapuram, is approx. 60 km south of Chennai and is said to have been christened after the Pallava King - Mamalla. This temple city was the 7th century port city of the Pallava Dynasty of South India. Mahabalipuram is best known for its different historical monuments — built between the 7th and the 9th century; it is now celebrated as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The temples of Mamallapuram depict the evolvement from rock-cut architecture to structural building. The Shore Temple gets the limelight with its various bas reliefs carved out of granite. Most of the monuments are rock-cut and monolithic, and represent the early stages of Dravidian architecture in which basics of Buddhist design are notable. These monuments comprise of cave temples, monolithic rathas (chariots), sculpted reliefs and structural temples. Where the pillars constitute Dravidian art, the sculptures are the best exemplars of Pallava order.

Since Mahabalipuram is recognized as a leading heritage site, people from far and near come here to savor the sight of amazing structures. Some outstanding monuments are Thirukadalmallai — the temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Descent of the Ganges — a massive open-air bas relief, Arjuna's Penance - relief sculpture, Varaha Cave Temple — a small rock-cut temple of the 7th century, and Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots) - five monolithic pyramidal structures named after the Pandavas.

Mahabalipuram boasts of priceless heritage that is worth exploring. Its rock-cut temples and caves are more than enticing; in fact, they just leave the onlooker mesmerized with their innovative carvings. Moreover, the city has become a centre of attraction for tourists and people interested in exploring heritage monuments.
