According to Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, M.K. Alagiri, the Tamil Nadu government must promote industrialisation in the southern districts of the state instead of staying focused only on Chennai and its surroundings.
"The chief minister should show the way for industrial development in the southern districts," Alagiri said after laying the foundation stone for a high learning centre at the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology, Chennai.
The minister said he has discussed the lack of industrialisation issues in Southern Tamil Nadu his father and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
"The chief minister has assured me that industrial projects will come up if land is identified in the southern districts. I have already asked all district collectors in the region to give me a list of available land," he said.
He added that his aim was to make Madurai at par with Chennai in terms of industrial growth. "I will do it at any cost and will ensure that the temple city and its adjoining areas are no inferior to any part of the state."
He added that Southern Petrochemicals Industries Corp's fertiliser unit in Tuticorin that is now non-functional due to fund crunch would start functioning again soon.
