The Sri Lankan rebel group, LTTE struck the capital city of Colombo by dropping bombs near army headquarters on Friday (February 20) night. At least two LTTE planes flew into Colombo's airspace around 10 p.m and bombed the city thereby injuring about 40 people. However, the military has gunned down both the aircrafts as they were trying to flee back.

One of the planes bombed the headquarters of the inland revenue department in the centre of the capital and set it on fire. The other plane which could not be detected by the radars was eventually brought down by the military. After the air-borne attack, there was complete black-out in the entire city of Colombo.  The Sri Lankan authorities signaled high alert in the city to avoid further attacks.

While speaking to media, the military spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara informed that the bomb weighed 30 kg. He further said that LTTE had brutal plans as the aircrafts were aiming something else. The two planes were Czech-built Zlin - Z-143 light wing air craft which sneaked into the city all of sudden. This is the first time that Sri Lankan military has been able to detect and destroy any LTTE plane.

Last year in October, two Tiger aircrafts bombed a power station at Kelaniya, Colombo, and a military base in the north-western Mannar district. The recent bombing is supposed to an attempt by LTTE to prove their presence in Sri Lanka. The rebel group has been pushed to back foot by the Lankan army in the north-eastern Mullaitivu district.
