Larsen and Toubro, the engineering and construction major, told on Tuesday that it will be bidding for the development of the second line of conventional submarines of the Indian Navy.

L&T has the credit for constructing the largest of Indian shipyards in near Chennai and in Gujarat. A.M. Naik, the chairman and managing director of the engineering major, while addressing the media, mentioned that these shipyards prove the potential of the firm for developing all types of naval construction as well as submarines.

"We will be bidding for the navy's second line of conventional submarines," he said.

He pointed out that L&T, along with the Russians, will also be competing with Amur-class vessels but the initiative did not take off due to lack of funds.

"Our shipyards in Hazira and Kattupalli have the capability to take up construction of vessels of about 7,000 to 9,000 tonnage and even warships of the size three or four times these vessels," Naik said.
