The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has given the Rs 2,460-crore monorail project to leading engineering company Larsen and Toubro (L&T). India’s first monorail system will be set up in Mumbai city. Under this monorail system, the cars will move on a single beam in an elevated corridor. L&T will be assisted by Malaysia-based Scomi Engineering to accomplish the monorail project in Mumbai. The Malaysian company specialises in manufacturing of monorail technology. The introduction of manorial facility will reduce the traffic congestion of Mumbai to a considerable extent.
Under the proposed monorail project, train trail from Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Wadala and Wadala to Chembur via Mahul corridor on Lump Sum Turnkey basis will be conducted. Besides these, the project involves designing, construction, testing, installation and commissioning. The proposed project is supposed to be completed within 30 months. The introduction of latest monorail electro-mechanical systems and rolling stock will provide viable solutions to urban transportation.
