Indian engineering major Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has signed a MoU with Atomic Energy of Canada to manufacture the 1,000-mw advanced reactors at its facility in Hazira (Gujarat). This was informed by the visiting Canadian minister for international trade and for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Stockwell B Day.
Atomic Energy of Canada has designed the Advanced Candu Reactor1000, which will have a generation capacity of 1,200 mw. These reactors would cater to L&T’s domestic as well as international markets.
AECL vice president Ala Alizadeh told the media that the ACR1000 is AECL’s generation III+ reactor. It is based on the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) technology, which is one of the most highly competitive nuclear technologies in the world with regard to capital cost, safety and efficiency, he added.
Meanwhile in another development India and Canada are close to sign nuclear cooperation agreement which envisages production of nuclear components locally and exports them to third world countries. Commenting on the proposed nuclear cooperation agreement Mr. Day said that, it will become operational even as the formalities relating to the additional protocol of the India-US civil nuclear deal are yet to be completed. He also ensured uninterrupted supply of fuel to India.
