The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been able to persuade senior leader L K Advani to continue as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. While confirming the news, party president Rajnath Singh said that BJP has experienced a massive set back in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections and now it needs to rebuild itself. He further added that the party requires the leadership and the guidance of Advani to move ahead.
After the announcement of election results on Saturday (May 16), L K Advani had decided to quit the post of the Leader of the Opposition and asked the Parliamentary Board to appoint someone else. The BJP-led NDA suffered heavy defeat in the general elections while ruling Congress-led UPA posted a record win. NDA got 157 seats while UPA swept as many as 262 constituencies.
Rajnath Singh said that BJP desperately needs the guidance of L K Advani to rebuild itself to meet the challenges of the future. NDA's bad performance in the elections has also shattered the dreams of LK Advani to become the PM of the country. Political analysts feel that BJP's personal attack on PM Mammohan Singh has badly affected the party in the polls. The party also increased it suffering by strongly supporting Varun Gandhi's cause. More importantly, there were no solid issues during the poll campaign.
