Liverpool on Tuesday night agreed to sell Spanish midfield footballer Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. He will have to undergo a medical test before signing for the club.
Liverpool denied disclosing the fee but it is estimated to be close to 30 million pounds.
The 27-year-old Alonso had joined Liverpool in August 2004 from Real Sociedad and since then was an integral part of the team.
Alonso had contributed to win the Champions League in 2005 and was instrumental in club’s attaining the second place in the league in the last season.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez had wanted Alonso to be in the team, but the midfielder's desire to join Madrid eventually persuaded him to allow him to leave.
