Liu Zige of China has won the gold medal in the Women’s 200m Butterfly in a world record time of 2:04.18 at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. She made the host country proud, bringing its first gold medal in swimming. Liu, who qualified fastest for the final in an Asian record of 2:06.25, smashed the old world mark by 1.22 seconds. It’s a time for double celebration for China, as the country’s second champ Jiao Liuyang managed to get the silver medal in a time of 2:04.72.
Jessicah Schipper of Australia, the earlier world record holder, who qualified second fastest for the final, tried to override the Chinese pair, but couldn’t match their wining pace. She appeared tired in the second half of the race and was overtaken in the final 50m. Finally, she succeeded in getting the bronze medal in a time of 2:06.26. Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland finished fourth in a time of 2:07.02.
