The Left parties in a critical but expected move, withdrew support from Manmohan Singh led UPA Government on Tuesday, July 08, 2008. The Communist parties move was in line with their threat to pull out, if the UPA Government continued to support the Civil Indo-US Nuke deal. They have announced that they will be meeting the President tomorrow to withdraw support from the UPA Government.

The communist parties remarked that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s recent statements on moving the IAEA soon had rendered any further talks on the issue meaningless. The Prime Minister however perhaps for the first time is unfazed at the threat and has announced that India will very soon approach the IAEA for a nuclear safeguards agreement, a process he expects to move ‘very fast’.

In the meanwhile the four Communist parties, the CPI (M), the CPI, Forward bloc and the RSP have sought an appointment from President Pratibha Patil for Wednesday morning to give the letter of withdrawal of support as well as to demand that the government proves its majority on the floor of the House.

The UPA government led by Dr. Manmohan Singh, relying on the newly enlisted support of Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, is expected to win the vote of confidence in Parliament and avoid early general elections.
