Energy is the most important factor for growth. And the scientists world over are trying to tap the safest and long lasting source in this regard. Now a group of researchers have developed a new form of energy source made from oxygen and silicon which can supply non-stop power for thousands of hours without being replaced.
The new battery is designed in such a manner that it would be lightweight along with having an unlimited shelf life and high tolerance to both humid and extremely dry conditions.
This new silicon-air battery can find helpful in a variety of applications like powering diabetic pumps, hearing aids, sensors and microelectronics.
Lead researcher Professor Yair Ein-Eli said, “Silicon-air batteries will be used like the ones already in use today.”
“But by using silicon – a safe, non-toxic, stable and more common material – we can create very lightweight batteries with infinite shelf life and high energy capacity,” he added.
Silicon-air batteries would be cheaper than the conventional batteries as they lack the built-in cathode of conventional batteries. In the silicon-air batteries, the cathode source is the atmospheric oxygen.
According to Prof Ein-Eli, the new product can be more powerful and rechargeable in the coming years.
