The newly elected Congress legislators of Mizoram nominated Lalthanhawla as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) of the state. The Congress party has voted out the ruling party Mizo National Front (MNF) government headed by chief minister Zoramthanga in the December 2 assembly elections. The poll results on Monday showed that Congress bagged 32 seats in the 40-member house while MNF bagged only three seats and its junior partner Maraland Democratic Front (MDF) got one seat.
The remaining four seats have been equally shared by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)'s major constituents Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) and Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP). Informing about the nomination of Lalthanhawla who is also the Congress party state president, the spokesman said that the meeting at the state party headquarters in Aizawl was attended by all the 32 newly-elected MLAs.
The MLAs took a unanimous decision to elect Lalthanhawla as the leader of the CLP of Mizoram. The meeting was also attended by All India Congress Committee general secretary Ved Prakash, union minister of state for chemicals and fertilizers and mines Bijoy Krishna Handique and former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro.
