The National Film Awards for 2006 that was announced on Tuesday, June 10, saw the Sanjay Dutt starrer 'Lagey Raho Munnabhai' bag four honours including one for the best popular film. A very well scripted and enacted movie, Lagey Raho Munnabhai proved successful in bringing 'Gandhigiri' to the public by invoking the values of Mahatma Gandhi. Lagey Raho Munnabhai thus became the very first Hindi movie sequel to attain the same feat of winning the National Award as its former version ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ did in 2003.
The other categories for which Lage Raho Munnabhai bagged the National Awards were for the best lyrics, best screenplay and best supporting actor. Soumitra Chatterjee, a highly honored Bengali film actor, bagged the best actor award for Bengali film ‘Podokkhep’, while film ‘Paruthi Veeran’ brought the Tamil actress Priyamani award for the best actress. Madhur Bhandarkar was honored with the best director award for film 'Traffic Signal', whereas 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' bagged the award for the best Hindi film. No announcement, however, was made on the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema.
