The inaugural match of the IPL twenty20 cricket tournament started on an exciting note as the Shahrukh Khan owned  Kolkata Knight Riders crushed the Bangalore Royal Challengers by a huge margin of  140 runs.

The opening ceremony of IPL was a great affair, but was followed by even more exciting event as Brendon McCullum massacred the Bangalore Royal Challengers bowlers. In a brutal assault on the Bangalore Royal Challengers, McCullum scored at will, blasting an undefeated 158 from just 73 balls, which is the highest score in a Twenty20 match. This extraordinanry effort from McCullum helped Kolkata Knight Tigers amass an imposing 222 for 3 wickets. Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar and AA Noffke picked up 1 wicket each for the Royal Challengers.

The Bangalore Royal challengers buckled under the pressure of a huge target, loosing wickets from the very outset. For Bangalore Royal challengers, none of the batsmen could stay at the wicket for too long and finally they were bowled out for 82 runs.

Praveen Kumar was the highest scorer for the Royal Challengers with 18 runs. Barring him no one could reach even the double figure mark. For Kolkata Knight Riders, Agarkar picked up 3 wickets whereas AB Dinda and Sourav Ganguly scapled 2 victims each. Ishant Sharma and Laxmi Ratan Shukhla picked up 1 wicket each. Brendon McCullam was adjudicated Man of the Match for his blistering innings of 158 runs which included 10 fours and 13 sixes.
