Kim Clijsters of Belgium reached the US Open semi-finals by defeating Li Na of China. She cruised into the semi-final match with a straight set win of 6-2, 6-4 against the Belgian in Tuesday’s match. The title win will make her just the third mother to win a Grand Slam title.

The 2005 US Open champion stepped into the tennis court after a two years hiatus.  She will face Serena Williams of the United States for a place in the final.

Clijsters said, “I’m just glad I got through this. I tried to stay focussed on my own game, mix it up and stay aggressive and winning those important points today."

Clijsters won her first Grand Slam title in 2005 and she was back into action after a gap of 2 years.

Her victory over Venus Williams in the fourth round at Flushing Meadow makes her one of the strongest title contenders.

Clijsters excited about her semis said, “Serena is a great athlete and a great girl and we always have some good laughs in the locker rooms and that's what makes it fun as well.”

The defeat came as a heavy blow for Chinese first seed Li, who could have become the second Chinese player ever to reach a Grand Slam semi-final. The first Chinese to make it into Grand slam was Zheng Jie's who was in the final four of Wimbledon 2008.
