The government disclosed on Thursday that Kendriya Vidyalayas will be offering education to handicapped students across India.

According to Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, who was addressing a Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan meeting, this exemption will be effective from the beginning of October.

The decision will immediately benefit over 2,500 students.

"This decision has been taken as a positive incentive, and as part of the government's policy towards greater encouragement and mainstreaming of differently abled children. At least 2,500 odd students are expected to benefit from this move," the HRD ministry said in a statement.

India has about 981 Kendriya Vidyalayas across the nation which provides education to 1 million plus students in secondary and senior secondary levels.

Since inception, these government-run schools have done exceptionally well in comparison to other government schools and majority of private schools.
