By topping the Women's 10m Air Rifle event on Saturday, August 9, Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic has clinched the very first gold medal of the Beijing Olympics. Katerina Emmons showed she was in superb shape as she broke the Olympic records in both the qualification as well as the final rounds.

Emmons shot a perfect 400 during the qualification round, equaling the World Record as well as setting a fresh Olympic Record. The previous Olympic Record was 399. During the final round, she shot 103.5 which gave her a final score of 503.5. Her score transcended the previous record of 502.0, which Du Li of China made during the 2004 Athens Olympics.

This Gold is 24 year old Emmon’s second medal in Olympics. She clinched a bronze in the same event at the 2004 Olympics held in Athens. Not even once did Katerina Emmons appear ruffled by the excellent shooting performances by ace shooters from other countries.
