Karunuday Singh advanced into his first International Tennis Federation (ITF) quarterfinals on Wednesday defeating Seong-Yoon Chung. Karunuday defeated the South Korean by 6-4, 6-1 in the $10,000 event played at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi.
Karunuday will next play against sixth-seeded Kento Takeuchi of Japan. Takeuchi advanced into the last eight stage after Indian N. Prashant retired due to cramps in the second set, trailing 5-6 after winning the first set by 6-1.
Former national champion Ashutosh Singh also made it into the quarterfinals after Briton Max Jones retired while trailing 4-6, 0-2. Ashutosh also won his last evening's match, abandoned due to bad light, against compatriot Yannick Nelord by 4-6, 6-4, and 6-4.
Ashutosh will challenge fifth-seeded Rohan Gajjar in the next round.
Meanwhile, second seed and first week's winner Young-Jun Kim of South Korea will be aiming for his second title. He defeated Indian qualifier Mithun Murali by 6-1, 6-4 to be in the quarters. The 29-year-old Kim next plays Indian wildcard Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, who defeated Malaysian Yew-Ming Si by 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Ranjeet Virali Murugesan had a win over wildcard Johny Arcilla of the Philippines by 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-0 .He will meet eighth-seeded compatriot Rupesh Roy in his next round.
