In an article in the CPI (M) party journal, People’s Democracy, Prakash Karat has hit out at the Chief election commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami. The CPI (M) general secretary has accused the CEC of class prejudice. Karat noted in the article that regrettably the truth is, that the CEC is blinded by class prejudice.
Prakash Karat on Friday alleged that the CEC’s justification of the curbs on wall writing and postering during poll campaign reflected his class prejudice. He also claimed that there was no action taken against big hoardings or distribution of cash or liquor.
The CPI (M) general secretary asserted that the class bias has made the CEC go after the poor activist who paints a satirical political cartoon on the walls of Kolkata while merely bemoaning the shameful and gross use of ill-gotten money.
CEC N Gopalaswami in a recent article in a leading daily had justified the curbs on wall writing and postering, stating some state laws against defacing of public and private properties. The CPI (M) general secretary’s sharp comments were a reaction to this. Mr. Karat rather stridently noted that the CEC seems driven by good intentions, but the way to hell is often paved with good intentions.
