Jyoti Basu, former West Bengal chief minister and a veteran Marxist leader, fell in the bathroom of his Salt Lake residence on Friday, September 5, 2008, due to which he suffered 'internal haemorrhage in the head'. This information was provided by the spokesperson of the nursing home where he was admitted the following day.

 

The 94 year-old leader of the CPI-M party underwent a CT scan and X-ray test, after which he returned to his Indira Bhavan residence in Kolkata's Salt Lake.  Debasish Sharma, the spokesperson of the nursing home, said, 'Basu has had an internal haemorrhage in the head.

 

He has been advised hospitalization.' Sharma added that the minister is currently at home taking the suggestions of family members for future course of action. Jyoti Basu is heard to have got stitches on his forehead after falling. The current West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee rushed to Basu's residence upon hearing the news. Jyoti Basu served as WB CM from 1977 to 2000.
