A team of French researchers from the University of Montpellier have discovered through their study that juices made from apple and purple grapes protects against developing clogged arteries. Dr. Kelly Decorde of the University of Montpellier revealed that the fruit juices have a more powerful effect than the fruit itself. The team of French researchers looked at how juicing affected the phenol content of the fruit as most of the studies usually conduct research on the raw fruit.
Molecular Nutrition and Food Research reports reveal that the animals that were fed grape juices had the lowest risk of developing artery problems. The University of Montpellier team stated that the Juice’s benefit comes from its high levels of phenols – an anti oxidant. The researchers further remarked that their study reveals that the amount of phenols contained in a food have a direct effect on its antioxidant properties. Dr Kelly Decorde remarked that their findings provide encouragement that fruit and fruit juices may have a significant clinical and public health relevance. The study is published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, April 2008 issue.
