Congress party today (April 17) named Ramesh Kumar and J P Aggarwal as its candidates for North East Delhi and South Delhi Parliamentary constituencies. The last date for filing the nominations for the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi is April 18. Earlier Congress withdrew the candidature of Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler from South and North East Delhi respectively because of their tainted image in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Both Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler faced widespread protests for their alleged role in '84 riots. The protest got intensified when a few days back a journalist threw his shoe towards Home Minister P. Chidambaram. The journalist was angry for giving clean chit to Tytler by the CBI. Following the incident, the Congress decided to withdraw the candidature of Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler.

The announcements of candidates in the two seats got delayed as some sections of the party were opposing Ramesh Kumar's nomination in place of his brother Sajjan Kumar. However, there was no debate on fielding J P Aggarwal from North East seat. Two-time Lok Sabha MP, Aggarwal is currently a Rajya Sabha member.
