Sajjan Jindal’s JSW group decided to build a sea port some where else in Orissa-Bengal border than building a deep sea port which had to be constructed under an agreement with Indian government. Talking about company’s decision Sajjan Jindal said that company had looked at locations near Digha, but there were problems of silting and cyclonic weather which would push up maintenance costs and make it unviable.

Now, JSW Group has found some place near Orissa-Bengal border at the mouth of the Subarnarekha River. The estimated cost of the port has been put at Rs 1,500-crore. The port is aimed to facilitate transportation facilities for the steel plant to be opened at Salboni in Bengal. The distance between the plant and the port is nearly 250km.

According to Jindal the port would be used to import coal and iron ore and export semi-finished steel to overseas market. On the other hand commenting on the pullout by Jindal from the deep sea port, secretary for industries Sabyasachi Sen said that Jindal’s pullout was not a worry, and added that it was not their primary project too. He affirmed that government is going ahead with the plan without any stop.
