On Tuesday, a video recording tape that claimed to show rock guitar star Jimi Hendrix, having sex with two women was brought out for sale on the Internet. The footage is 11 minute long which shows a man who looks like Jimi Hendrix, playing boisterously with two unidentified women in a dimly lit bedroom. A Los Angeles based adult film studio, Vivid Entertainment is distributing the DVD of the tape.
Vivid Entertainment has also, in the past, distributed the sex tapes of actress Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee among others. It said in a press release that the video footage of Hendrix was shot about 40 years ago in a hotel room. Jimi Hendrix, who is considered a legend in rock guitar, died in 1970 at age 27 in London. He has hits like "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze" and "Foxy Lady" to his credit.
Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid said that the video proves that Jimi Hendrix could have been as great a porn star as he was a rock star. However, whether the film is genuine or not, that remains to be seen. The legitimacy of the film was challenged by Hendrix's longtime girlfriend during the 1960s, Kathy Etchingham. After viewing the still pictures taken from the footage, she said "It is not him." She added that the man in the footage has broad face and wide nose and nostrils, which did not meet Jimi's face.
Apart from the rock star's girlfriend, author of Hendrix's biography "Room Full of Mirrors", Charles R Cross also challenged the identity of the man in the tape. He said it does not look like Jimi. On the other hand Vivid Entertainment said that it had consulted many experts to establish the true identity of the man in the footage, including Pamela Des Barres, author of "I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie".
The tape was bought by Vivid from an individual distributor, Howie Klein, who, after purchasing it from the collector had approached the entertainment company.
