Naresh Goyal-led private carrier Jet Airways signed a code sharing accord with Malaysian Airlines (MAS) on Wednesday (February 18). Under the new code sharing pact, the passengers will be able to book tickets of both the airlines from next month. According to a statement, Jet Airways will avail code share on MAS flights operating between Kuala Lumpur and Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Commenting on the new code sharing pact, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal said that the agreement between the two major airlines will enable the customers to increase their field of choice in terms of booking tickets for flights connecting Malaysia and India. He also informed that Jet hopes to expand its network services between India and Malaysia thereby aims to make Kuala Lumpur its Southeast Asian hub in the longer run. Currently the carrier operates only the Kuala Lumpur-Chennai route.
According to MAS managing director Idris Jala, the new code sharing pact with Jet will enable his company to procure the untapped traffic from secondary points in India through the five Indian gateways. It is expected that Malaysian Airlines will be able to capture about 10 per cent of untapped traffic from India to Kuala Lumpur and beyond. The value of the potential traffic between India and Malaysia is estimated to be Rs 163.75 million annually.
