Government has plans for putting the proposal for developing a "central university of Jammu & Kashmir" in the Cabinet today.
This decision has been adopted by the government after the earlier Jammu & Kashmir university proposal, which was put forward under the leadership of Arjun Singh, ended in controversy. The university office, which had been put up in Srinagar, had to be shifted to Jammu, after facing protests from the locals.
The decision for submitting the proposal before the Union Cabinet was adopted late last week, with the briefs prepared hastily. The reason for the urgency was felt to be part of the Centre’s review of projects in J&K held last week in Srinagar.
Since the Valley and Jammu groups are fighting over the location of the university, government has plans for setting up two universities, so that the requirements for both can be met.
