An official from the Kolkata-based Jai Balaji Industries informed on September 18, 2008 that the firm is planning to set up a steel, cement and power plant at Purulia. The official added that the company will start working on this project this November provided the state government gives them the required land by then.

Addressing the media, Jai Balaji chairman and managing director Aditya Jajodia said, 'We hope the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) will hand over the requisite land soon so that we can start work on the Purulia project from November.' He added that a timeframe of seven years has been fixed for the completion of this project.

It was reported that a total of 3,800 acres will be required for this entire project. For the first phase, however, 1,200 acres will be needed, the Jai Balaji chairman and MD said. Jai Balaji Industries is setting up a five million tonne integrated steel plant, a three million tonne cement plant and a 1,215 MW captive power plant on an investment of Rs 16,000 crore.
