J K Dutt a 1971 batch IPS officer of W. Bengal cadre is widely expected to become next chief of CBI. The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has recommended his name for the post after the superannuation of Vijay Shankar on July 31. Other than J K Dutt, special director of CBI ML Sharma of Rajasthan cadre of 1972 IPS batch has also been recommended.
 
Among five names recommended by CVC, Karnataka DGP R Srikumar of 1973 batch, M L Kumawat (1972 IPS batch), and Ashwani Kumar (1973 IPS batch) are three besides J K Dutt and M L Sharma. J K Dutt is believed to be heading the contest for the post for he already has worked with CBI for 15 long years. J K Dutt, a graduate from St. Stephens, has had a very good career as an IPS officer.
