Scientists at India Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have developed hydrogen fuel cells which will help to drive automobile buses. The Indian scientists have utilized the indigenous cryogenic rocket -technology to develop the new method of powering vehicles. It took two years to come up with fuel cells. The new hydrogen fuel cells are ready to get inducted in the buses. According to the chairman of ISRO, G Madhavan Nair the rocket -technology has not been exactly implemented in the fuel cell, it is actually endowed with liquid hydrogen handling technology.
ISRO has developed this new technology in collaboration with Tata Motors. The two sides had signed an agreement regarding this matter on 2006. Under the deal both Tata Motors and ISRO have designed and developed an automobile bus using hydrogen as a fuel through fuel cell route. The ISRO chief informed that Tata Motors has executed the locomotive part and hydrogen handling system of the project.
If everything goes well, the new hydrogen driven buses are expected to hit the roads by next year, informed Nair. When asked about the future plans of ISRO for India automobile industry, an official said that the space research organisation wants to make hydrogen as the alternate fuels for the vehicles. Although the cost of hydrogen driven bus will be higher than conventional vehicles powered by diesel, but will help to keep the environment clean.
