Israeli jets struck targets along the Gaza-Egyptian border and also a building east of Gaza city today (Oct 3) causing damage but no casualties according to Israeli military.
The targets along the Gaza-Egypt border comprised of tunnels allegedly used for smuggling. Israel’s response using force follows the firing of a rocket and a mortar shell into Israel by militants late on Friday. Both landed in open ground.
“The aircraft struck two tunnels and a building that housed a munitions workshop. The air strikes are in response to what has become the daily launching of rockets and mortars into Israel,” an Israeli army spokesman was quoted as saying.
To corroborate the claims of the Israeli military, a Hamas security official confirmed that two tunnels were targeted and so was a building. According to him, the building was a marble factory. He also said that there were no casualties.
A day earlier Israel released 20 Palestinian women from prison in exchange for a video recording of an Israeli soldier held by Gazan militants. The Israeli soldier in question, Gilad Shalit, was captured by the Hamas in a cross-border raid in June 2006.
