Islamabad International Airport has been awarded with its new name of Benazir Bhutto International Airport after the slain former prime minister on country’s 61st independence ceremony.

Prime Minister Yusaf Raja Gilani had decided to rename the airport in June 2008. After receiving the notification from the government, airport administration replaced the old board of Islamabad airport with Benazir Bhutto International Airport.

Bhutto was assassinated at the gate of Liaquat Bagh park in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007 after addressing an election rally.

The government also replaced the name of Rawalpindi General Hospital with Benazir Bhutto hospital, where she died.
