The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to kick off with the opening match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Bangalore Royal Challengers on Friday. The Kolkata Knight Riders are led by Sourav Ganguly whereas Rahul Dravid leads the Bangalore Royal Challengers.
The kind of interest IPL has generated amongst players as well as cricket fans is simply unparalleled and promises a heady mix of cricket and glamour.
It will be exciting to see how the players compete with each other. The IPL and the money makes players, from two opposite national teams, sit in the same dressing room and plot strategies. Enemies will turn into friends and friends into enemies. An interesting example of this will be Symonds playing alongside Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh for Mumbai Indians and Brett Lee charging at his Aussie teammates (playing for others).
With industrialists and film stars like Vijay Mallya and Shah Rukh Khan owning teams, the glamour quotient of the IPL has already sky-rocketed. The 44-day tournament, which will be played in twenty20 format, has several international stars playing alongside the best of Indian domestic and under-19 cricketers.
