The Apple iPhone, which will probably hit the Indian markets by September 2008, will cost around Rs 28,000. India is going to get the 8GB version of the iPhone. Based on the user response, Apple might bring in the 16GB version in India by mid 2009.
The iPhone has got some top of the line features like Wi-Fi, a powerful e-mail client, TV feeds, online music store and even map based location guide. It is expected to be priced at around Rs.28,000. When the Apple sources in Singapore were contacted, though they maintain that it is going to be launched in 2008 but they refused to confirm any exact date for the launch.
Apple is on guard as far as the sales volumes of the iPhone is concerned and is tight lipped about it since it is wary of the gray market. However, when asked about the carrier deal, an Apple source did confirm that Vodafone will be the official carrier of iPhone in India. However, the possibilty of Apple extending the iPhone to other carriers was not ruled out by Apple sources.
The iPhone is a hot gadget, which has been named the 'Invention of the Year 2007' by Times magazine. It has features like a multi-touch screen, a virtual keypad, digital camera and a music player. It is a quad-band phone which uses GSM technology and also supports EDGE data transfer as well.
