The laser technique has created ripples in the world of technology. A laser is an electronic optical device which emits light radiation. A laser generally expels light in a narrow deviating single colored beam whose wavelength is very well defined wavelength. The working of a laser was first (Invention of First Laser) demonstrated by Theodore Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories on May 16, 1960.
Today, Lasers have developed into a multi billion dollar industry. Laser techniques are widely used in devices such as Compact disc (CD) and DVD players where the surface of the disc is scanned by the laser which is only a few millimeters in size. Lasers are also used in bar code readers, printers and pointers. Lasers are also used in industries for cutting steel and metals and to give them a desired shape. Because of its well defined wavelength and short pulse duration it is also used in spectroscopy.
It also finds its application in military where it is used to identify targets and illuminate weapons delivery. It is even used for internal surgery and cosmetic applications.
