The International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol has revealed on Friday, April 25, 2008 that there is a likelihood of a terrorist attack during Beijing Olympics. Interpol Secretary General, Ronald Noble remarked that there is a ‘real possibility’ that the Beijing Olympics will be targeted by terrorists or even anti-China groups may attack athletes.
Ronald Noble further remarked that recent Tibet related protests have further complicated the normal security considerations for a major international event like the Olympics. Earlier this month, in an attempt to foil terrorist attack, Chinese authorities had detained 45 east Turkistan terrorist suspects, who planned to carry out suicide bomb attacks and kidnap athletes at the Games.
The international leg of the Olympic torch relay has been received amidst wide protests across the world. Noble asserted that the terrorist threat is compounded by the very nature of the Beijing Olympics. He remarked that China will open its doors to thousands of foreign visitors and media persons during the event. This could provide an easy cover for terrorists who would use the Olympics as a ground for creating an immediate global impact.
