With an objective to meet the ever growing demands of both luxury and comfort hotels in India, UK-based InterContinental Hotel group on September 17, 2008 announced its plans to launch 20 hotels in the major cities of India. The newly planned project is supposed to get executed within the next two to three years. The developers assigned for the construction of these hotels include MGM-Emaar, Eros and Today.
According to Jan Smith, chief operating officer for Southern Asia and Korea, the setting up of 20 hotels would add up some 5000 rooms as a part of company's expansion plan. Mr Smith believes that India has the potential to generate tremendous growth opportunity in luxury hotel segment. The Group has planned to set up the new project under brand names of Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts, Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts and Holiday Inns and Resorts.
Meanwhile report claims that the InterContinental Hotel group did not go for the renewal of contract with Delhi and Srinagar-based Grand InterContinental. The former alleged that the country-based hotels are managing the properties on their own. Going back to future plans of the Group, it is heard that the Group has decided to exploit places where the demand of luxury hotels is at high. Thus apart from metros, it will also settle in cities like Pune and Dehradhun.
