Intel has launched its advanced desktop processor, “Intel Core i7”, the first member of a new family of Nehalem processor designs, in Bangalore on Tuesday (November 18).  Built on 45 nanometer processor technology, the Core i7 processor is energy efficient and will be almost four to six times faster than Intel's current platform. The 45-nanometer production technology first appeared in a server chip called Xeon (Penryn), which launched in the early phase of 2008.

Core i7 processors are also different from their predecessors in that they have "QuickPath," a new microarchitecture that integrates memory controller into each microprocessor. QuickPath will replace Front Side Bus used in Xeon and Itanium platforms.

Intel claims that it enhances processor speed for video editing, immersive games and other internet and computer activities by up to 40 per cent, without increasing the power consumption. The company has already shipped 100,000 units of the product globally and is expecting to double the figure in a week's time. It is also rolling out the i7 in tier II and tier III markets in India.

Intel is planning to launch a 32 nm processor sometime next year. The server and mobile product version of Core i7 will also be available in sometime.
