Wanting to step up the speed of server computers for the purpose of hosting websites and storing files, the Intel Corporation stated that the customers will start selling machines with six processors built into one piece of silicon. In a recent interview, platform director Shannon Poulin said, 'Dell Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co, IBM and Sun Microsystems Inc will begin selling computers that use the Xeon 7400 chips this week.'
Intel wants to step up pressure on the Advanced Micro Devices Inc in the server market which is the most lucrative part of the chip industry and is therefore all focused on accelerating up product development. 'The new Xeon chip was to go on sale in the fourth quarter and debuted earlier than planned. The performance is heads and tails above our previous products and where the competition is,' Poulin said.
It was underscored that the new Xeon chip employs much less electricity and is even about 48 per cent faster. The cost of chips can be over a thousand dollars, which is 10 times the average cost of PC processors. The processors can perform more tasks simultaneously if there are more cores. Maximum chips today have two cores, whereas more expensive models employ four.
