With a view to encourage scientific research, IT major Infosys Technologies announced the launch of Infosys Science Foundation in Bangalore on Tuesday (February 17). The Science Foundation will give a prize of Rs 50 lakh each to five young Indian scientists in recognition of their contributions and achievements across various scientific streams. The eight board members of Infosys contributed an amount of Rs 21.5 crore to set up the foundation. Infosys said that an amount of Rs 2 crore will be granted each year to supplement the prize money.
 
A five-member jury of renowned international experts will choose the winners for the prizes. Infosys Science Foundation will present the prizes to researchers in five streams of Physical Sciences (Physics and Chemistry), Mathematical Sciences (Mathematics and Statistics), Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences (Biology and Medicine) and Social Sciences. While announcing the news, chairman and chief mentor of Infosys Technologies, NR Narayana Murthy said that scientists below the age of 40 years will be nominated for the prizes. 

Commenting further, Murthy stated that in order to excel globally, the country requires bright minds across all areas of academics, government, business and society. He said that the Science Foundation has been set up to foster higher education in India. Murthy stressed the need of sound higher education system to solve out the problems of the people of the country. Infosys Technologies is one of the leaders in global IT industry. The software major offers a wide spectrum of IT and consulting services with revenues of over 4 billion dollars.
