As per the latest findings, the mighty Thar Desert of India sprawling over the northwestern part of the country is expanding in area rapidly. The experts have therefore warned that desertification is emerging as an acute challenge to the country. Scientists P Goswami and K V Ramesh from the Bangalore-based Centre for Mathematical Modeling and Computer Simulation point out that India may witness a significant increase in its desert area within the next 100 years.
The findings of this study were published recently in the journal, Current Science and brought out in alliance with the Indian Academy of Sciences. The scientists stated that endeavor was made to select a reliable projection that indicated a clear swelling in the size of the Thar Desert in India over the next century. For instance, the scientists informed that they had studied the pattern were rainfall in this project. The Thar Desert that is also called the Great Indian Desert, presently covers an area of 200,000 sq km.
