According to ISRO there could not be any manned mission to moon before 2012. Talking with media professionals Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chairman G. Madhavan Nair said that ISRO is conducting a basic study needed for a manned mission on the moon. Also, the said study includes the technology needs for successful landing.

Nair said that once the study program is launched to understand many fundamentals there would be a clear idea on manned mission. He admitted that the information available from the literature is scanty, and with that he estimated that India's manned moon mission may take up to 2012. He candidly said that before that India can have man around earth and back.

The statement has come in the aftermath of successful launch of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) which carried Chandrayaan-I which in turn is a cuboid spacecraft that included a Moon Impactor Probe gadget. India's space research has been up and up since 1963. Now, India is not dependent on overseas agencies in developing satellites and launch vehicles.
