Famed Indian sculptor, Sudarshan Pattnaik won laurels for the country as he won the top honors at the International sand artist’s competition. The artist from Orissa chose global warming as his theme for the massive sand sculpture. The 25 feet tall piece of art simply portrayed a polar bear and faces of people from three continents – Asia, Africa and Europe. The sweating polar bear sitting atop a world heated by an firestorm made of the hair of the three, a man, woman and a child, from different continents gave a suffering call – ‘save my family'.
Sudarshan Pattnaik with his student Jitendra Kishore Jagdev, used tonnes of special sand to create the mammoth sculpture in about a week’s time. Pattnaik’s creation, immediately after being unveiled for the competition, attracted large number of people, making him hopeful of coming into the top three. The artist himself remarked that he had put his heart and soul into the sculpture and the jury, artists and public together voted it as the best. The second and third positions at the festival were grabbed by artists from the United States and the Netherlands respectively.
