Very soon you will see condom vending machines at the railway stations of the country. The idea of installing the machines was proposed by the National Aids Control Organization (NACO). The idea is to create aids awareness among the people.
The Indian railways, along with the various UN agencies, NGO’s and NACO, have been spreading aids awareness campaign through Red Ribbon Express, the world's largest mass mobilization AIDS awareness campaign. Indian Railways also offers 50% concession in train fares for Aids patients for traveling at Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) centers.
The southern railways had conducted AIDS awareness campaign between 2002 and 2006 in Vijaywada. According to a survey, the transport workers who frequently travel, are more prone to AIDS. According to the report of the United Nations Development Fund for Women 2007, India has nearly 50 lakh people suffering from AIDS.
Every year more and more people in India are being subjected to this dangerous disease. Initially, the condom vending machines will be set up in the big railway stations and in the metros.
