The Indian Premier League (IPL) drugs tribunal banned Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Asif for one year for failing a dope test during the inaugural edition of the Twenty20 tournament last year. The IPL drugs tribunal chaired by legal expert Shirish Gupte found Asif guilty of violating the anti-doping code. The 26-year-old Pakistani fast bowler had tested positive for the banned substance nandrolone during the inaugural edition of the cash-rich event.
However, the bowler claimed that he had not consumed the banned substance intentionally. According to the IPL tribunal, the ban will retroactively imposed on Asif from September 22 last year which means he will not be able to participate in this year's T20 championship league. Asif's urine samples showed traces of the banned substance above the permissible limit.
Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also imposed ban on Asif following the positive test. Talking to media, PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt stated that Mohammad Asif will be inducted in the national team when the ban will end. Last June, the Pakistani pacer was also detained for 19 days in Dubai after customs officials found opium in his wallet. Mohammad Asif has played 11 tests and 31 one-day internationals for Pakistan since his debut in 2005.
